As many of our readers know, we have been making a lot of cheesy flavored dips out of chickpeas this year. Some people say that makes them a hummus, I guess it does not really matter to us what they technically are but we sure do love the flavor of them! Out of all of the chickpea cheeses we have made, this tomato and basil vegan cheese is our favorite! This recipe is another one of the recipes we are posting for the food blog awards we are participating in. If you are interested in supporting us, click here and then click like to vote for us. Vegan Pepper Jake Cheese
I used to love melting some vegan pepper Jack cheese on a black bean burger back home, however, to my knowledge vegan pepper Jack cheese is not available here in Europe. So, I decided to make a vegan pepper Jack cheese of my own recently. I made one I was pretty satisfied with! After making it a few times though, I got a crazy idea to take it one step further after Boutique Vegan sent us this BBQ sauce. A whole new recipe was born: vegan pepper Jake cheese! Vegan pepper Jake cheese is mildly spicy with a hint of sweet and tangy underlying the obviously “cheesy” tone. Not only is this recipe quick and easy but it is another installment in our budget recipes category.
Vegan Dulce de Leche – Caramel Sauce
Recently one of our readers asked if we could make vegan dulce de leche – caramel sauce from our vegan sweetened condensed milk recipe. We came across this recipe (click here) and decided to try it. The end result was amazing! This recipe works and we were so pleased with it we wanted to share their recipe with our readers as well.
Vegan Smoked Cheddar Cheese Dip
We usually make most of our vegan cheeses using almonds or cashews as the base ingredient. However, I wanted to try something different as a way of keeping the cost down when making vegan cheese. As a result this vegan smoked cheddar cheese dip recipe is made using chickpeas (garbanzo beans). The flavor is amazing and the recipe is simple. We have been making this delicious snack a lot since coming up with the recipe a few months ago now. Give it a whirl!
This vegan smoked cheddar works great as a spread or sandwich condiment as well. As you can see in the photos, we enjoyed it in a vegan “cheese steak” sandwich made using soy “steaks”. Click here for the vegan cheesesteak recipe!

Chipotle Hummus
I love hummus! I made this chipotle hummus about a month ago now while Athanasia was in Athens because she is not a big fan of mildly spicy foods. This is a pretty common occurrence for me to make spicy foods to eat while she is away. I would label this particular hummus to be in the mild category of spicy. Hummus makes a great snack for around the house or even to take with you to work or school. One of the best parts about making hummus is how extremely quick and easy it is to make it! I like to boil my own chickpeas but it’s even quicker if you prefer to use canned chickpeas.
We are rolling out a new format with this post as well. We are going to try to include the cost of some of our recipes from now on. We probably will not be able to do this for all of our recipes but we will do it when we can. So, without further delay, here is our first installment in our budget recipes category: Continue reading Chipotle Hummus
Chipotle BBQ Vegan Cheese Dip
This chipotle BBQ vegan cheese dip is one of my favorite snacks I’ve ever made! We use our own homemade barbecue sauce in it but you can use whatever bbq sauce you prefer to make it. I first came up with this recipe about 4 years ago now and it’s been a hit with everybody who has tried it ever since! It is an incredibly easy and simple recipe to make as well as a great appetizer or snack when you are in a hurry. This recipe makes a lot of dip (6 cups or 1420 ml) so make sure your blender can hold that much or you might have to cut the recipe in half.
Meatout – Eat Vegan For A Day
Today we are going to take a break from our nutrition series (for those of you following us) to talk about Meatout – eat vegan for a day. Meatout is a day to encourage all people to try a vegan diet for a day. We think it would be great if more people tried a vegan diet. Obviously we feel vegan food is real and delicious despite rumors circulating stating the contrary. Therefore we decided to compile this list of some recipes we think non-vegans would love to eat today (and maybe even ask for seconds!)! Our nutrition series information will be coming soon for our readers who are waiting for it. Continue reading Meatout – Eat Vegan For A Day
Vegan Sour Cream
We needed to make a good vegan sour cream recipe for the vegan Nachos Bell Grande recipe we have coming up later this week. Granted, it’s been a long time (8 years) since I have had sour cream, but I am really happy with how this recipe turned out! Of course, there are many possible uses for vegan sour cream so we felt this recipe deserved it’s own post. Here is how we made it: Continue reading Vegan Sour Cream
Vegan Nacho Cheese Dip
Kick back and watch your favorite movie tonight and enjoy it with some vegan nacho cheese! This is one of my personal favorites. It’s not for everybody because it has a little kick to it; ye be warned! Continue reading Vegan Nacho Cheese Dip
Barbecue Sauce
I love Barbecue sauce! I had tried to make my own BBQ sauce a few years ago but I didn’t really like it. Needless to say, I have learned a lot about making condiments since then so it was time to try again! Back home in Minnesota it is easy to find a delicious organic gluten free vegan BBQ sauce at just about any grocery store. Here there are only a few options and none of them are organic. So, the journey began…
